After a career which began in Hawkes Bay, and has taken him all over Australia (with a few stints in France), Tim Geddes fell in love with the ocean and the sunshine of the Fleurieu Peninsular, choosing to make McLaren Vale his home after graduating from Adelaide University School of Oenology in 2000. In 2013 Tim established Geddes Wines in the Blewitt Springs foot hills, with the view to create both a brand and facility which held community and quality at its core.
Today, Tim is both a contract wine maker for numerous small to mid-sized labels who entrust him with their precious fruit (much of which is sourced from family vineyards tended to by multiple generations of family members), as well as being the producer of his own wines sold under the Seldom Inn label.
Tim has since been joined by Neville, a Guide Dog School drop out, who holds the important position of cellar door Mascot/ Sales Assistant/ Biscuit Thief.
Whether creating wines for himself or the friends who rely on his craftmanship, Tim’s Grape to Wine philosophy is simple: No one knows a vineyard as well as the growers who tend the soil each year and watch on as buds give way to leaves, bunch-set gives way to grapes, and grapes turn into the marvellous fruit from which a good wine first derives. Growers are the custodians of the vineyards and Tim becomes the custodian of this hard work once the fruit passes into his hands, where he gently moulds it into the best expression of varietal and terroir the vintage allows.
All of Tim’s wines are open fermented, gently extracted and basket pressed to showcase subtle tannins and generous complex fruit characters. Bringing a good wine to life is a community effort and one which deserves to be celebrated with a cold beer between respected collaborators at the end of each day.
